General

“It was one thousand four hundred years ago that Xuanzang trudged across the limitless desert in solitude…”. Tsai Ming Liang, the filmmaker who established Taiwanese cinema in the global landscape, brings his acclaimed theatre piece to Tai Kwun for its Hong Kong premiere. Previously featured in Brussels, Vienna, Taipei, and Kwangjin, this production will be designed specifically for the outdoor environment of Tai Kwun.

Tsai’s meditative work traces the seventeen-year pilgrimage of Xuanzang, the Buddhist monk who journeyed along the Silk Road. Through rich allegorical imagery and physical movements, the performance transcends traditional boundaries, blending installation art, theatre, and painting. The work features the stellar performances of Lee Kang Sheng, Tsai’s long term collaborator, and Kao Jun Honn with the latter physically present to paint on site.

In this exploration of ancient narratives and contemporary spirit, Tsai contrasts the frantic pace of our information-saturated world with hypnotic movements symbolising loneliness and determination. The dichotomy between the two redirects our gaze to the present, seeing time from a new perspective.  With minimalist yet stunning staging, colour, and theatrical elements, this interdisciplinary work becomes an ode to silence, inviting solace and a fresh perspective on time as Tsai continues to leave an indelible mark on the global artistic landscape beyond cinema.

Company

Homegreen Films was established in 2000, represented by director Tsai Ming-Liang and well-known actor Lee Kang-Sheng, leading professional and promising Asian artists to develop film, visual art and cross-border creations with originality and universal perspective.

Director

Tsai Ming Liang, born in 1957. He premiered his debut feature, Rebels of the Neon God, at the Berlinale in 1992. His sophomore film, Vive L'amour (1994), won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival while The River (1996) won the Jury Award at Berlinale, thus solidifying his status as a major filmmaker. All of his feature films so far have been selected by the top three film festivals of the world.

Cast

Born in Taipei in 1968, Lee was discovered on the street by Tsai Ming Liang, who casted him in his first film, Rebels of the Neon God, where he played himself. Not long after, Lee contracted a strange illness which caused his neck to be tilted. Tsai followed Lee in his search for treatment and later included this experience in the film, The River. Lee’s slow speech, movement and unique sense of rhythm deeply influenced Tsai and led him to the path of “slow cinema”. In recent years, Tsai has been working on his “Slow Walk” series of short film. In each film, Lee is clad in a monk’s robe with shaved head and bare feet. He appears in a different city in each film, walking extremely slowly. He has since become known as a slow-walking performance artist. Lee and Tsai have collaborated for more than 30 years. Lee’s silent face is practically the signature of Tsai’s cinema.
