General

Since the opening of Tai Kwun, regular Performing Arts programmes such as “Afternoon Series”, “Saturday Music at Laundry Steps”, and “The Hearth” have heralded a unique performing arts scene by inviting emerging local artists to curate and develop mini-concerts, dance, theatre, comedy and multi-disciplinary performances for the unique environment at Tai Kwun. While offering audiences a reprieve from the flurry of activities in Central, these regular performances also provide a supportive space to nurture artists in the community.

To celebrate Tai Kwun’s 5th anniversary, a special programme, “Stepping Up”, will be held over the long weekend of May 26 – 28, featuring musicians, comedians and circus artists who have worked and grown with Tai Kwun. The music performance on 26 May, curated by music producer Janet Yau who has collaborated with Tai Kwun since 2018, will showcase a diverse mixture of classical Western music to contemporary Chinese music, from standard ensemble to mixed ensemble. On 27 – 28 May, circus newcomers and veterans will return with Circus Box, who made their debut performance at Tai Kwun in 2020.

The long weekend performance will be hosted by Vivek Mahbubani, a local sought-after stand-up comedian who is one of the first artists to perform at Laundry Steps since Tai Kwun’s opening. Visitors are welcome to come and enjoy these first-rate and vibrant performances in the inviting atmosphere of the Laundry Steps.

CLASSIX (Woodwind Quintet)

26.05.2023 2pm (Friday) Music

Curated by Janet Yau

Despite various combinations of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn have been used by composers since the Classical period, it was not until the turn of 19th to 20th century that the woodwind quintet flourishes. In the concert, CLASSIX will perform innovative works written for woodwind quintet by 20th century composers Debussy, Ligetti and Julio Medaglia that showcase the colours and timbres of the five individual instruments, as well as the versatility and expressive potential of them as a whole.

Performed by Aaron Leung (flute), Viola Ng (oboe), Frederick Fung (clarinet), Lulu So (bassoon) and Alfred Lee (guest horn player)

26.05.2023 3pm (Friday) Music

Curated by Janet Yau

Let the music take you places at this chamber concert, from Tai Kwun all the way to France (Milhaud), Croatia (Božić-Kudrić), Austria (Walter Rabl) and Soviet-Russia (Glière). Be prepared to traverse diverse musical terrains too – ranging from romantic lyricism to modern playfulness and to ethnic liveliness and tranquil meditation – masterfully conjured up by different composers using the violins, cello, clarinet and piano in points of overlap and divergence.

Performed by Vivian Shen (violin), Sean Lai (violin), Vincent Leung (cello), Frederick Fung (clarinet) and Joanne Li (keyboard)

Harmonious Blend of Chinese and Western

26.05.2023 4pm (Friday) Music, Chinese & Western Instrumental

Since the start of 20th century, new music written for traditional Chinese music instruments has more varieties both the way they are written and instrumentations. In this concert, we will enjoy 3 different types of ensembles:

“MouWongGun” -  Traditional Chinese Sheng (Chinese mouth organ) is generally considered the ancestor of the harmonica. These two instruments have its roots in two different music cultures, the East and the West and both use free reeds, which result in similar sonority. Audience will hear works of Vivaldi and Bach re-arranged for the sheng and harmonica duo.

Performed by Yue Kin-long (sheng), Kelvin Leung (harmonica) and Alison Ma (keyboard)

Programme

Vivaldi

Concerto for Two Flutes in C Major, RV533: Allegro

Bach

Concerto for Oboe and Violin in C minor, BWV1060

Piazzolla

Libertango

“Bowed String Plucked String” - Guzheng and cello both use strings to make music, but their sound and techniques are vastly different. The lines produced by the cello contrast sharply with the “ball” sound from plucking of guzheng’s string with finger-picks. The concert will feature works composed by contemporary composers for the guzheng, cello, and piano.

Performed by Grammy Yeung (guzheng), Chor Kai-hei (cello) and Perseus So (keyboard)

Programme

CHAN Hing-yan

The Workshop

TAO Yimo

Butterfly and Blue

LIU Le

Romantic Breeze

Z. de Abreu

Tico Tico No Fuba

“Resonating Sheng and Guzheng” - The Chinese sheng, guzheng, and percussion each have a long history, but there is no tradition of them being played together. This performance will bring to the audience several contemporary Chinese works full of exotic flavors, using ethnic music as their themes.

Performed by Yue Kin-long (sheng), Grammy Yeung (guzheng) and Sylvia Tam (percussion)

Programme

Robert Zollitsch

Boating Against the Current

LIU Tieshan & MAO Yuan

Hands

27-28.05.2023 2pm & 4pm (Saturday & Sunday) Contemporary Circus

Look at your hands, what do you think they can do?

This performance is a collaboration from four juggling and movement artists, despite having completely different props and skills. They all possess unusual power and strength. They can make a diabolo bounce and hover, a crystal ball seem weightless and alive, or even turn their body upside down and flip in the middle of the air.

In addition to enjoying the performance, we invite everyone to warm up with us and experience the basic skills from the artists.

Performed by: Rhyn Cheung (Pole Dance), Charles Huang (Diabolo), Ho Ho-yeung (Contact Juggling), Ng Ping Nam (Hand balancing)

The Circus Gashapon Machine

27-28.05.2023 3pm & 5pm (Saturday & Sunday) Contemporary Circus

The future is unpredictable, just like the inside of the gashapon capsule is full of unknowns, and this randomness makes the "future" even more fascinating.

This performance uses a gashapon capsule machine to showcase the wittiness and creativity of young people, in which they aim to bring a refreshing juggling performance to the audience.

Performed by:   Anson Ng (Rope Dart), Alvin Cheng (Diabolo), Mike Chan (Plate Spinning), Cheng Ho Fung (Freestyle Football), Jason Lee (Ball Juggling)
