A renowned contemporary composer and active internationally as a conductor, Sir James MacMillan has established himself as one of the foremost composers of his generation. Drawing influences from his Scottish heritage, strong Catholic faith and social beliefs, MacMillan has attracted international attention for his compositions. Invited as a guest conductor by Hong Kong Sinfonietta, MacMillan will be making his Hong Kong début conducting the orchestra on 8 Sep at HK City Hall.

Few days before the concert, music-lovers will have a close-up encounter with Sir James at Tai Kwun alongside Hong Kong Sinfonietta Concertmaster James Cuddeford as they give invaluable insights into their musical experiences.

With pianist Colleen Lee, Hong Kong Sinfonietta Concertmaster James Cuddeford and Principal Clarinet Johnny Fong performing MacMillan’s chamber works that are rarely heard in HK, it will be a treat for the ears.

James MacMillan       Composer

In the past three decades, MacMillan’s achievements and musical language have attracted significant admiration and acclaim in the music industry, setting an example for young modern composers to follow. After the extraordinary success of The Confession of Isobel Gowdie at the 1990 BBC Proms, MacMillan’s works have since been performed and broadcast all over the world. His percussion concerto Veni, Veni, Emmanuel has received close to 500 performances, along with a cello concerto for Mstislav Rostropovich and four symphonies. His interpreters include Evelyn Glennie, Colin Currie, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Vadim Repin, Leonard Slatkin, Andrew Davis, Marin Alsop, London Symphony Orchestra, New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and The Sixteen. Also internationally active as a conductor, he was Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic until 2013 and Composer/Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic from 2000 to 2009.
