Local dance company Unlock Dancing Plaza explores the infinite possibilities and pleasures that come from the rhythm of our bodies in #danceless, advocating the view that “everyone can dance”. #danceless provides an opportunity for the public and dance artists to come together and connect through dance.

We are thrilled to invite the public from all walks of life to participate in the “#danceless – Body on Stage” workshop, which provides a space for both amateurs and artists to experience the ultimate body rhythm and create dance pieces together.

Participants will also take part in an advanced workshop and become part of the footprint shoot, a dance video that will be screened at Tai Kwun in July.

  • The workshop will be conducted in Cantonese
  • Recommended for ages 18 or above
  • The workshop will last for approximately 90 minutes
  • This workshop requires physical movements. Participants are advised to consider his / her own physical condition before enrolling
  • Please wear comfortable clothing for the workshops

About Unlock Dancing Plaza

Unlock Dancing Plaza is a promising contemporary dance company founded in 2002, with Ong Yong Lock as Artistic Director and Joseph Lee as Associate Artistic Director (Joined in 2020). Unlock is committed to pursuing innovative breakthrough and theatrical liberation. These commitments are embodied in and practised through its productions. The company focuses in reflecting dance on the basis of individual. Through defining dance in the uniqueness of a body and being free from the institutionalised aesthetics of dance, Unlock deeply believes, “Everyone can dance”.

Curating cross-media, cross-regional, and experimental projects, Unlock Body Lab is developed to discover and show the possibilities of dance in various forms. #danceless includes a series of creative works, performances and workshops that are based on public participatory as the main way of artistic practise. It promotes and deepens the diversify imagination of dance; facilitate the mutual exchange between artists and the public through experiencing dance together.

Unlock is a three-time Hong Kong Dance Awards recipient and highly recognised by the dance industry. Its representative works include Jump to Mars, Dance with me, Boy Story. Reborn, Wanderer, serial dance-theatre Walls 44, Chopin VS Ca, and etc. The company is financially supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council since 2009.

Ong Yong Lock was born in Malaysia. He joined the Hong Kong Dance Company in 1989, then the City Contemporary Dance Company in 1993. Ong was a founding member of South 'ASLI' Dance Workshop (SADW). In 1997, he became the Artistic Director of SADW (1997-2001). In 1998, Ong joined the Expressions Dance Company in Brisbane, Australia to perform in the Brisbane Festival. He was awarded the Hong Kong Dance Awards 2002 for his choreography of ballet 4 In for The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and was appointed as arts advisor of dance by Hong Kong Arts Development Council in the same year. He received the Award for Best Artist (Dance) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2014. 

In 2002, Ong founded the Unlock Dancing Plaza with Elsie Chau to promote and popularize modern dance. His choreographic talents also spoke for itself in the productions which were shown in Asian Art Festival, International Sino Dance Week, Malaysian Chinese Dance Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong Dance Festival and 20th International Academy of Dance Festival. He has collaborated with various dance companies including Hong Kong Dance Company, City Contemporary Dance Company, Beijing Dance/LDTX, Guangdong Modern Dance Company, Xiamen Modern Dance, The Hong Kong Ballet, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and Queensland University of Technology. Ong's highly acclaimed full-length works include 10 Nights' Wanderings, Whispering Of Love, Love Sick, Kung Fu and Tofu, Chopin VS Ca, Walls 44 and Wanderer. Wanderer received the 2015 Hong Kong Dance Awards "Outstanding Achievement in Independent Production".

Andy Lee graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Contemporary Dance. He began ballet training in Jean M. Wong School of Ballet at the age of twelve.

He performed in a series of Hong Kong Ballet Group production: Carnival of the animals, Cinderella's Slipper, La Sylphide, Swan Lake as well as Play Boys in 2002. Then he followed the academy to Conservatarie de Paris to perform Patition en black and Circle song.

Recent works include Boy Story. Reborn, Comfort Zone, #danceless01 - The Sound, Take 55, Alice Dream in Hong Kong, Dialogue of space series 2 - Did not kill a single man, Dialogue of space series 3 - Canton disco, Upside down, Kaledoscope of dance from Yunnan, Grey Area, Room X and Cattle Runway.

Graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Contemporary Dance. Yau has participated in many performances and choreography. Recent performances and choreographic works include Desmond Pang's concert STILL DREAMING; Unlock Dancing Plaza's Hero@ Eb Major, Chopin VS Ca and Chopin VS Ca II; The Media Evangelism Limited's An Ark Sparks In The Dark…; Jade Kwan's concert Shining As Star; Hong Kong Dance Alliance's Dance x Men and YEAH SHOW 2010, 2011. Yau is the choreographer of Man Hard for E-Side Dance Company in the Hong Kong Dance Festival. He also serves as dance and drama tutor for several youth centers, schools and Christian organizations.

Yau also has extensive experience in theatre. He is Founder and Creative Director of Sweet Three Theatre since 2006. He has received Outstanding Director Award at Rotary Club Drama Competition in 2007 with works Sinking Dream. In 2009 and 2010, he participated in performance tour of a commissioned work by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). He was community cultural ambassador and actor of When Man Meets Lady for Goodnews Communication International in 2011. His performance has received critical acclaims. Yau joined Unlock Dancing Plaza as Resident Artist since 2012.

Kerry Cheung graduated from School of Nursing, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has been engaging with contemporary dance since university, and is particularly interested in body perceptions, hoping to conduct bodily conversations and connect humans to nature through dance. She has been participating in different body trainings and performances after graduation.

She has performed in New Force in Motion series’ Unmixed , REAL showcase series’ FIT in WHAT, 2018 Arts Voyager: As Day Alights… and Maze: Shifting Boundaries by Passoverdance, Dance On series: Untitled III , Mobile Dance : Maybe Tomorrow in Jockey Club New Arts Power, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series’s Elephant in the Room.
