Compound Characters brings together short works by four filmmakers who use literal forms of multiplicity to develop their characters. In Nina Yuen’s Heather Who Reduced, teen girls cast from Yuen’s elite private prep school all portray a single character named Heather Who, acting as a symphonic series of introductions merging into a single voice. Christoph Giradet and Matthias Müller’s Personne is a film about somebody and nobody in which all the actions and movements, seeking and striving, and alterations and associations revolve around “La reproduction interdite”, a 1937 painting by the Belgian surrealist René Magritte. In Li Shuang’s T, Li uses imagery of feet to subtly interweave a straight man's experience working as a customer service representative of a women’s socks online retailer on Taobao. That same need of constant self-reassertion is also explored in William Laboury’s Hotaru as we make our way through the multimedia duplicity of a person seeking stardom.
