Using books as a starting point to dive into the stories of Tai Kwun, the “Tai Kwun 101” x Bookbinding Experience invites participants to assume different identities and immerse themselves in the exhibition before engaging in the bookbinding process.

A form of prison labour in early colonial days, bookbinding remains a vocational training option offered by the Correctional Services to people under its custody.

Referencing the cover of the former Police Instruction Book for Chinese Recruits – one of the exhibits in “Tai Kwun 101”, paper artist Because Yeung will use the traditional Japanese bookbinding method to lead participants in creating their own vintage notebook using recycled paper from school exercise books.

Participants will:

  • Go on a special tour of “Tai Kwun 101”
  • Learn Japanese bookbinding
  • Experiment with basic bookbinding tools
  • Gain a basic understanding of the structure of books
  • Take home a notebook of around 100 pages (20x15cm)

*Participants must be 15 years old or above.
