From Space to Space: An Illustrated Guide to am Infinite Something is the title of Wing Po So’s artist book that steers its readers through the micro and macro of Wing’s model of the universe constructed with the tenets and actual material of Chinese medicine. To begin the Listening Party, Chinese science fiction writer Dung Kai-cheung will be conducting a performative reading of his commissioned writing for Wing’s work to a live soundscape created by Oliver Cheung. The soundscape is constructed from recordings made with Chinese medicine and also from Wing’s family Chinese medicine shop. It mirrors the cosmological order of the exhibition Six-Part Practice, acting as a aural meditation guide for the works in the show.

Following the performative reading, the audience will be invited to share their own sounds inspired by Wing’s exhibition Six-Part Practice. We will have sound-making devices available for use including a record player, cassette deck, and DIY instruments—though feel free to bring your own. From science fiction film soundtracks to excerpts from their favourite books, from makeshift musical instruments to actual instruments, we invite participants to bring something to share that inspires them.

Chinese herbal tea will be served. The Listening Party will be in Cantonese and English with simultaneous translation available.

Participants: Dung Kai-cheung, Oliver Cheung, Wing Po So

This public programme is part of Six-Part Practice, a solo exhibition of works by Wing Po So. Wing’s artist book From Space to Space: An Illustrated Guide to an Infinite Something is available for purchase in JC Contemporary. ‘From Space to Space Listening Party’ is organized by Hera Chan and Eunice Tsang.
